What Is Keratinization and Why Does It Matter for Your Nails?
Your natural nails may look like one smooth, solid surface, but they are actually made from many compacted layers of keratin.
Keratin is a strong structural protein also found in the hair and skin. Keratinization is the natural process through which new nail cells develop, harden, flatten and form the visible nail plate.
Understanding this process helps explain why some nails feel strong and flexible, while others may become dry, flaky, thin or prone to splitting.
Where does nail growth begin?
Healthy nail growth begins in the nail matrix, which sits beneath the skin at the base of the nail.
New cells are continually produced in this area. As they move forward, they harden and compact together, eventually becoming the nail plate that we can see.
The visible part of the nail is made from hardened keratin cells. This is why caring for both the nail plate and the surrounding skin is so important.
Why do nails peel and split?
Because the nail plate is made from layers, those layers can begin to separate when the nails are repeatedly exposed to water, household chemicals, dehydration, picking or incorrect product removal.
Over-filing can also thin the nail plate and weaken its structure.
This is why I always prepare the natural nail carefully and choose products and techniques according to the condition of each client’s nails.
My aim is not simply to create beautiful nails. I want to preserve and support the health of the natural nail underneath.
Does cuticle oil really make a difference?
Cuticle oil cannot change the natural structure of the nail, but regular use can help keep the nail plate and surrounding skin conditioned and flexible.
Dry nails are more likely to feel brittle and develop splitting around the edges. Applying a nourishing oil every day is one of the simplest ways to support your nails between appointments.
One of the products I recommend is Bio Sculpture Ethos Almond Oil. It contains almond, avocado and jojoba oils with vitamin E and is designed to nourish the nails and cuticles. Bio Sculpture advises applying it daily using the pipette.
